The insertion and management of artificial devices implanted within the human body will become increasingly common for maintaining and improving health. "Implantables" have already evolved from artificial hips and knees to assistive devices that have built-in electronics, such as artificial pacemakers or cochlear implants. Implantable eCare systems are the next wave. These systems will be comprised of integrated implants that communicate with external monitoring devices via the Internet.
Around the globe, the market for electronically driven implantable devices is set to expand significantly. U.S. demand for implantable devices is projected to grow about 10 percent annually through 2009 based on the expanding prevalence of chronic disorders coupled with new product introductions.
