LEDs have a primary lens affixed to the LED package to enhance light extraction out of the package. These primary lenses typically produce a wide-angle output pattern, which may not be optimal for the application. A TIR total internal reflection (TIR) secondary lens can be mounted on the LED package and used to shape the beam pattern. Many applications use LEDs in an array. In these applications, a multiple TIR lens can be used to alter the output pattern of an array of LEDs using a single optic, reducing the space requirements and manufacturing costs.
