High Power LEDs

High-power LEDs are typically used for illumination, and have a power handling capability greater than .35 watts. Drive currents for high-power LEDs range from 100 mA to 2 Amps and higher, creating heat within the LED junction. These LEDs have a dedicated thermal path to remove heat from the LED package, and also require additional heat sinking to ensure long lifetimes in the application. High-power white LEDs are available today in efficiencies greater than 140 lumens per watt, enabling many traditional lighting applications to be converted to LED with dramatic energy savings.
